When it comes to electric fly killers, there is no one size fits all. What is good for one situation may not be suitable another.

The only way to determine the best fly killer for you is to choose one that has the features you need or want, however the choice may be governed by another factor such as price, size, style, type etc.

Some considerations:

  • Area of coverage required
  • Type of environment - large, small, food preparation, damp, etc.
  • Does it need to be visually attractive?
  • Mounting options
  • Electric grid or glue board?

Understanding a little more about how they work and what is available may make choosing more straightforward. A fly killer is required to do three things:

  1. Attract the insect
  2. Kill the insect
  3. Collect and contain the body of the dead insect

Attracting the fly is usually done with ultraviolet (UV) light which is invisible to humans, so often a coating is added to the lamp to make it appear a particular colour when switched on. The colour is not seen by the flies or other insects and has no bearing on how effective it is at attracting them.

However, the efficiency of the lamp deteriorates as it is used, good quality lamps will require changing after 12 months use, but some cheaper lamps will last as little as 2-3 months.

As it is not possible to tell how much UV output the lamp is emitting without sophisticated equipment, cheaper lamps may actually be an expensive and unhygienic option.

Fly killers used in food preparation and production areas should be fitted with shatter resistant lamps, these have a plastic coating which contain any pieces of glass in the event of a lamp being broken.

Manufacturers calculate the area of coverage by determining the distance the UV light can be seen, the brighter the lamp, the further distance it can attract flies.

As the figures are based on the insect killer being placed in a central position and visible from all around, by mounting on a wall, the area of coverage will be drastically reduced and this should be taken into account when considering a particular model.

When the insect has been attracted to the fly killer, it may be killed in several ways, most commonly by electric grid or glue board.
